Meeting 11 August 2010
Jack McGowan AD7NK called the meeting to order at 19:00 and greeted the 22 attendees.
Treasurer’s Report – Bob Call KE7SBQ
General Fund $ 1,135.63
Website Committee – Jon Otto AD7GS
Jon was not available but sent the website information to Don Doehring K7DOD who reported that the during the last month we had 670 hits by 578 visitors who viewed 1589 pages. For some inexplicable reason, we had 300 hits on August third. The visitors came from: U.S., Canada, Spain, Japan, UK, and Australia.
Club Station Committee – Tom Lang K7VOA and Nils Holmes N1LS
In addition to organizing the club station, QSL cards from the special event continue to dribble in.
Tom now has QSL cards from all states except Delaware for an All States Award for the club.
Technical Committee – Ron Phillips AD7RP and Gene Schouweiler W0KAD
There are problems with the WinSys, but the high speed internet connection is working.
Next month, after Ron returns, he will provide documentation so we can all use these new features.
Jack McGowan AD7NK has received two requests for assistance from the club
- The Sahuarita Boy Scout Troup 301 is asking for help with a signaling merit badge.
The requirements for the badge include:
- Make an electric buzzer outfit, wireless, blinker, or other signaling device.
- To send not less than 35 words, at a rate of not less than 35 letters per minute.
- Demonstrate an ability to send and receive a message in the International Send and receive in the International Morse Code, by:
- Buzzer or other sound device, a complete message of not Morse Code by wigwag and by blinker or other light signaling device at the rate of not less than 20 letters per minute.
- Send and receive by Semaphore Code at the rate of not less than 30 letters per minute.
- Know the proper application of the International Morse and Semaphore Codes; when, where, and how they can be used to best advantage.
- Discuss briefly various other codes and methods of signaling.
Because this is a special merit badge to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the scouts, it must be completed by December 31, 2010. If those interested in earning the merit badge haven’t already started to work on it, the consensus is that there will not be enough time to learn the code. It was pointed out that merit badges usually do not have a time limit.
Bob Epstein AD7FQ and Tom Lang K7VOA will contact the Assistant Scoutmaster and explain the difficulty of the tasks.
- The second request came from the Catalina Radio Club. They will be setting up demonstrations in two ramadas at Fort Lowell Park on the third full weekend in October and ask for our participation. A signup sheet for volunteering was circulated and the following members volunteered: Don Doehring K7DOD, John Long KA0IKI, Clark Mayo K0FCM, Raymond Draves KE7VTR, Tom Lang K7VOA.
The possibility of a spring field trip to Mt. Hopkins was discussed. More details at the next meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 19:40.
Our next meeting will be, September 8th.
