Green Valley Amateur Radio Club

Meeting December 13, 2007

Meeting called to order by President Gene, W0KAD at 6:00 PM with a cocktail hour from 5:00 to 6:00. Everyone was welcomed to our annual Christmas Party held at The Grill on The Green in Canoa Ranch. The dinner choices were Salmon or Prime Rib with a salad, vegetable, and dessert.

The only business was the election of officers which as is follows:

After the elections a sing along was held. Everyone had a good time and the party broke up early.

Radio Club at Continental School begins again on January 9th after a two week Christmas vacation.   In the time between October 12th and our Christmas party, on December 19th, the students completed a total of 15 beginner Christmas trees, 7 advanced Christmas projects and 12 flashlights.  The flashlight is not a conventional light, but uses 4 ultra bright LEDs and a 4 inch fluorescent tube with 2 power settings.   When we begin in January, all first year students will start on their AM/FM radios and all advanced students will start building the wing for their radio controlled model airplane.

I want to thank all of you that contributed your dollars to the Continental radio club program.   Also, thanks to the adult volunteers who really make the program work.

Cub Scout Winter Day Camp

The Green Valley Amateur Radio Club assisted the Cub Scout Winter day camp on December 21, 22, 26 and 27.   We set up four stations where the cubs learned various skills.

• Station 1
  We had a 2 meter base station where each Cub got a turn at talking to a remote station .   Bill and Sharon Hanold, N9CHN & KA9GPY, became very good at engaging the cubs in conversation and overcoming mike fright.
• Station 2
  This was a soldering demonstration.   Most of the cubs had never seen metal melt before.   They got to solder 2 wires together.
• Station 3
  This was a Morse code and phonetic alphabet station. Each cub learned 5 letters in code and spoke their first name in phonetics.
• Station 4
  Snap Circuits.   Each cub made a simple series circuit with a battery, switch and light.   When this worked, the light was replaced with a motor and propeller.

Each station program lasted 6 to 8 minutes and we typically had 6 cubs at each station.  Over the 4 days, we had several hundred cubs that participated.

NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

As I sat thinking about the GVARC activities coming up this year, I began to realize even more than I had before what a big pair of shoes I have to try to fill as president. Gene Schouweiler, WØKAD, who led this club with distinction for the past three years, has created a spirit of excitement, dedication, excellence, and appreciation among the members that few others could have produced. If anything needed to be done, Gene was right there helping. Under his leadership, and with his help and encouragement, GVARC members have accomplished the following (among many others):

• Field Day participation
• New SteppIR beam for the club station
• Linking of the .27, .29, and UHF repeaters
• Numerous training courses for Technician, General, and Extra Class license candidates
• Many Volunteer Examiners (VE) trained
• Continental School electronics training for students
• Continental School financial support
• White Elephant Parade communications and coordination with the SAV
• Titan II Missile Museum discone antenna use by hams established and promoted
• Titan II Missile Museum special events station
• Cub Scout ham radio familiarization events
• Boy Scouts Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) event participation
• Spring and Fall picnics and Annual Christmas Banquet

Obviously, numerous other club members were involved in the success of these activities. Most of you know who they are. However, the positive, friendly environment Gene created contributed significantly to these expanded horizons and community outreach efforts of GVARC.
