Green Valley Amateur Radio Club

Meeting January 9, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by president Ron AD7FV. He gave a brief biography of himself primarily around his ham radio experience.

New members and guests introduced themselves.

The new board was introduced:

Ron AD7RP will continue as Technical and Jon AD7GS will continue working on the Web page along with Ron AD7RP. Lloyd N7GV will continue with the various education programs.

Treasurers Report:

Carolyn AB7KC reminded all that Membership dues are due now!!!!

Technical Report:
Ron AD7RP informed us that Murphy is still alive and well. He and Gene WOKAD, primarily have been trying to link our three repeaters. They have made many trips up the mountain and run into another problem each time after bringing the VHF repeater back down to work on it. He indicated they would try one more time and if not successful will give up on linking the VHF repeater to the two UHF repeaters.

Education Report:
There will be both a Technical and General Class given simultaneously starting January 20th on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 4 at the SAV building.

Lloyd N7GV, along with several members, set up 4 stations at a Cub Scout Outing on two separate occasions. One was held for two days before Christmas and another for two days before New Years. The booths set up were to teach soldering, some code and phonetic alphabet, snap circuits, and use of the 2 meter hand held. This was held outside and the weather the first two days could have been better.

Twenty-four students are signed up for radio club at Continental School. Two projects were finished before Christmas. The seconds semester began today. The nine who are second and third year participants in the program were given the chance to work on radio controlled planes. All nine elected to take part in the program. If they are able to demonstrate that they can take off and land and generally handle the planes they will be allowed to keep them.

Web site:
Jon AD7GS said we now have a new server and that problems on getting onto the web site should be solved. He presented very interesting information about use of the web site including how they found the site and where they were from. It is amazing what kind of statistics can be gathered at web sites.

New Business:
Ron AD7FV asked for help in meeting topics. If you have any suggestions please get them to him. Everyone was asked to submit questions about ham radio with the idea of having a future meeting answering the questions and/or having a section on the web page for asking and answering.

Program:
Ron AD7FV gave a Power Point presentation on how he rigged a duel band outside antenna so he could use it with his hand held sitting in his easy chair without having to go to his shack. It was a very informative meeting. He talked about how to select cables and connectors among other things.

Continental School Radio Club

Those students (15) who are building AM/FM radios are approaching the half way point, so there will be lots of music in the class in the next few weeks. Those eight students building the radio controlled planes are also about half done, so we are hoping for warm, calm weather in March. We recently learned the school superintendent is leaving in June.

That makes the 4th new super since I started the radio club. I think I still have my notes from educating the last one.

HIDDEN TRANSMITTER HUNT ANYONE?

We have been asked, unofficially, if we would be interested in setting up a hidden transmitter hunt for the scouts this spring. If this becomes a reality, I think it would be fun to do a practice hunt here in Green Valley. The last time I participated in a transmitter hunt, it was in Milwaukee on ten meters. That was over 50 years ago, but I still remember the fun we had. I won a prize, a 807 tube painted brown to resemble a beer bottle. Wonder what ever became of that. If we do it now, we would probably do it on two meters. Think about it and if you get any clever ideas, let me know.
