Merge Area Clubs into one Tucson Council??? - Updated 12/03

Due to declining attendance, declining membership, and duplication of activities, the idea of combining interested area clubs into one Council has been suggested. Several of those who have responded via the RST email reflector have suggested an area Council be formed. Clubs have the option of dissolving and recommending their members join the Council. The Council would have its duly elected officers and board, which eliminates the need for existing participating clubs from trying to get their members to fill administrative positions. The Council would be made up of Special Interest Groups (SIGS) with its own chairman or coordinator and hold meetings anytime and any place the SIG members wanted. Lets say there is a Public Service SIG. You are interested in Public Service so you join this SIG. There is also a Repeater SIG in which you have no interest, so you don't join. The Public Service group decides to have a monthly meeting, so you attend the meetings and participate accordingly. The SIG chairman or coordinator then attends the regularly scheduled Council meeting and reports on his/her SIG's activities. The SIG members do not need to attend Council meetings, but are always welcome to do so. The point is, you join the function(s) you are interested in and don't have to listen to reports, debates, complaints etc. of all the others. The Council officers are the administrators, take care of insurance, collect the dues, plan social events etc. This is just a quick description, but think you get the idea.

Clubs who wish to remain as is could and should send a liaison to the Council meetings to stay abreast of the Councils activities and report to the Council the clubs activities.

I would like to hear your thoughts or alternate ideas. Email your comments to: Webmaster Replies and/or excerpts thereof may be posted without personal identification.

(Dec 16, 2005) -- A convoy carrying contributions to the ARRL/Salvation Army Holiday Toy Drive set off December 15 from the Memphis warehouse where the toys have been collecting for several weeks. On hand to see them off were representatives of the ARRL, The Salvation Army, country music singer Patty Loveless, KD4WUJ, Amateur Radio volunteers, the news media, dignitaries and, of course, Santa Claus, whom Loveless summoned via 2 meters. Loveless, who served as national chairperson for the campaign, expressed her thanks to Amateur Radio clubs and individual hams who gave to the drive.
