24 - 26 May, 28 - 29 May, 30 May - 1 June
On Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of Memorial Day weekend (24 — 26
May), the Green Valley Amateur
Radio Club assisted in conducting a transmitter hunt for Cub Scouts as part
of the planned Scouting activities for the holiday weekend. Additional hunts
were held on Wednesd
ay
and Thursday, 28 — 29 May, and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 30 May — 1 June.
All events were held at Camp Lawton Boy Scout Camp on Mt. Lemmon, Arizona
(see the terrain map at right).
GVARC's portion of the event was to train the Scouts in the use and art of radio direction finding. Included were demonstrations of directional antenna properties and how these properties, along with a suitable radio receiver, can be used to locate radio broadcasts. The Scouts then got hands-on time as they worked to locatea hidden transmitter.
Such skills are important not only because transmitter hunting (sometimes called "fox" hunting) is a fun thing to do, but because the skills also can be used in various search and rescue scenarios.
A big "THANK YOU" to all GVARC members who helped make this event a success!
